Drop the "www." from your URLs

Habits are hard to break.  Even the great "MK" found out the hard way that you should stop appending "www." to every website she tries to go to.  Click the 'Read More' if you want to get into the details, but here is an example of why it can cause problems...
When a customer is trying to go directly to the Yondo video site for MK Quilts, they may try to type...
    "www.mkquilts.yondo.com" instead of "mkquilts.yondo.com"
Which results in the following screen to appear...

You may use the many links on the MKQuilts.com website to get to the appropriate MKQuilts.yondo.com site.  (Not case sensitive.)   Don't append the "www." if going direct.

Why it works this way...

For those of you that want to know the technical reason why this happens, I will try to keep it simple.
Back in ancient times when the internet was starting to be used by the common man, businesses were issued their company URL like "MKQuilts.com".  (There is no case sensitivity in URLs or email addresses.  Using capital letters helps make it more legible.)
Companies would then setup separate computers for their website, email, ftp (file transport protocol), and others...
www.mkquilts.com
smtp.mkquilts.com
ftp.mkquilts.com
This would allow routing of certain types of information to the appropriate computer.  This is now obsolete.  Most website providers will alias (forward the request anyway) to the computer when you use the www. on some websites, but Yondo obviously does not for their sub-domains.
OMG - there he goes with more techno babble!
If you care... every dot separated section of a URL is a sub-domain to the one to the right of it.
subsub.sub.primarydomain.com
Many browsers may add the "www." to the URL, but only for the primary domain name.

Thanks for the helpful techno info! I appreciate that you explain it simply AND in more detail... it helps me get the idea and answers my burning questions of Why? What if? and Why not?
